Microtek Slimscan C6 USB - Page 1/1
Rating : N/A Review Date : July 22, 2000

Umax scannerI had the chance to test out a Mirotek Slimscan C6 recently. I was very suprised when I first got the box. When Microtek meant slim they weren't kidding, this thing is much slimmer compared to the Umax scanner that I've been using. So what makes so great about this scanner ? Apart from the fact that it's one of the cheapest costing only about RM 350 (about USD 90) it is only perfect for home users and SOHO applications. The SlimScan is truly tiny, thanks in part to its contact image sensor (CIS) technology. Though it can scan a full letter-size page, it weighs less than 8 pounds, which may tempt some users to pack it along with a notebook when traveling.

The future is USB ?

Just like the Umax scanner that I'm so used to the Microtek Slimscan C6 is also a USB version. The great thing about USB is it's so simple to setup the drivers. I took the scanner out of the box along with the drivers. Plugged the USB cable in together with the power adaptor and immediately Windows detects a USB device and asks for the drivers. Just pop the CD in and set the path and installation will go on without a hitch.

Software included with the the SlimScan is more than enough for any budding graphic artists. Included in the package are Adobe PhotoDeluxe, Ulead PhotoImpact 4.0 and Caere PageKeeper Standard. Also included are Caere OmniPage Limited Edition and an interesting product called PictureFun! which links you to a web site where you can order posters, watches, stickers and quite a few other items with your newly scanned images imprinted on them. Microtek's ScanWizard is so easy to use that it only takes a few minutes to learn. The software works with any TWAIN compatible image editing software.

One of the things that really attracted my attention that is included with the C is Microtek's ScanSuite software. All you have to do is press the button on the front of the scanner and the software interface pops up letting you scan and print copies, OCR a document, scan and fax or scan and e-mail whatever you need to. How much easier can it get !
